Record Care and Preservation
Best practices for storing, cleaning, and preserving vintage phonograph records.
Record Care and Preservation
Storage Environment
Proper storage is fundamental to record preservation. Maintain a stable environment with:
- Temperature between 65-70°F (18-21°C)
- Relative humidity between 40-50%
- Protection from direct sunlight
- Vertical storage in appropriate shelving
- Protective sleeves for individual records
Cleaning Techniques
Regular cleaning removes dust and debris that can cause wear and affect sound quality. For shellac 78 RPM records:
- Use soft, lint-free cloths
- Clean in circular motions following the groove
- Avoid excessive moisture
- For stubborn grime, use specialized record cleaning solutions
- Never use household cleaners that may damage the shellac
Handling Best Practices
Always handle records by the edges and label area. Avoid touching the playing surface, as oils from skin can attract dust and cause permanent damage. When placing records on the turntable, ensure the surface is clean and free of debris.
Playback Considerations
Use appropriate needles for the record type and condition. Replace needles regularly to prevent excessive wear. For valuable or rare recordings, consider using modern sapphire or diamond needles that minimize record wear while maintaining authentic sound characteristics.
